GTB Natural Resourses

To answer questions from fisherman having issues or what they think are issues of them not catching salmon in the bays”. Erik Olsen stated.

The GTB Natural Resources Department set two nets in Northport Bay on Monday of this week. (One 1,800’ net to the northeast of Bellow Island and one 1,800’ net just to the east of the Northport Marina.) We then lifted these nets on Tuesday and reset them out by the Grand Traverse Shoal (toward the mouth of the Bay) and pulled them on Wednesday. These are the only nets I know that have been fished in the Northport area in a while.

Through June 2012, GTB commercial fishers had not harvested any salmon in Grand Traverse Bay (…I don’t have all of the July reports in, but will give you an update in a few days.) During 2011, GTB fishers harvested 4,324 pounds of salmon from GT Bay…and only 40 pounds off of Leland.

Good or bad…The commercial wholesalers have indicated to the fishers that they (the wholesalers) can sell all of the pen raised (aquaculture) salmon that they can get their hands on…but they don’t really want the local“wild” salmon. Because pen raised fish are fed a pelletized diet, their flesh is a consistent color. As you know, this is not the case with wild caught fish.
