Kids’ Free Fishing Day Postponed until 2015
Traverse City, Michigan – The Rotary Camps & Services Water Committee announced today that the annual Kids Free Fishing Day event, usually scheduled over Father’s Day weekend, will be taking a year off. Due to the construction of a new harbor at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus and limitations of other public access sites, the event will take a year hiatus.
Kids Free Fishing Day has hosted an average of 500 kids and their families for the past the eight years and brought together a number of partners and volunteers. “This effort is an important part of Rotary Camps & Services Water Committee, which is committed to stewardship of water resources in northern Michigan”, said Pete Strom, chairperson of the Water Committee. “Since the beginning of the event, we have hosted thousands of kids and their families. It takes a year of planning and 50-plus volunteers to run the event. We evaluated quite a few sites in and around town, but each had limitations, so the committee decided to take a year hiatus.” One big expense will be constructing a net to enclose the area at reconstructed NMC harbor; the committee will be actively fundraising to support the net fabrication. Kids Free Fishing Day will return in June 2015.
